1000 books before kindergarten

Blue OwlWhy 1000 books before kindergarten?

Studies show that reading aloud to young children strengthens their language skills and builds their vocabulary. The objectives of this nationwide movement are 1) to promote reading to newborns, infants, and toddlers, and 2) to encourage parent and child bonding through reading.

How can we possibly read 1000 books before kindergarten?

It’s not as hard as you think. Three books per day for one year, or one book per day for three years would reach the goal of 1000 books. Also, you can read the same book multiple times and each time counts!

How do I sign up?

Register in person at the Pittsford Community Library Children’s Desk. You will receive a welcome bag, and learn how to track books online with Beanstack. (Or, if you prefer, we can give you sheets to keep track of your books by hand.)

What is Beanstack?

Beanstack is an online service that makes keeping track of the books you read easy and fun. Its smartphone-friendly website makes it convenient to quickly log books anywhere. Best of all, it offers weekly, personalized book recommendations. Beanstack is available through the generosity of the Friends of the Pittsford Library.

Did we mention there are prizes?

Celebrate each 100 books read with a beautiful sticker. Receive a prize when you reach 500, and a free book to keep when you reach your final goal of 1000 books. With your permission, we will put a picture of your child on our Wall of Fame and on the Library’s facebook page to share their accomplishment.
