TOWN ADDRESSES HYDROFRACKING CONCERNS

Posted:
March 20, 2012

Gas exploration and extraction using high-volume, slick-water hydraulic fracturing, or hydrofracking, is a current topic of discussion in our community. We’d like to provide the following information to clarify the status of hydrofracking in Pittsford. You may also read our formal statement

on the topic by clicking HERE.

Concerned residents have suggested the Town pass a moratorium on hydrofracking in order to provide time to consider economic and environmental impacts and to update planning and zoning laws accordingly. However, because the Town of Pittsford’s zoning code is exclusionary in nature, land use that is not specifically permitted in the zoning code is not allowed. Therefore, hydrofracking is currently prohibited in the Town of Pittsford so a moratorium is not necessary.

Furthermore, even if hydrofracking were eventually considered to be a “reasonable” practice, the Town has determined it will never be a land use that fits in with the character and fabric of the Pittsford community. As always, should you have any questions or concerns about any topic, please feel free to contact Town Supervisor Bill Carpenter directly via email (bcarpenter@townofpittsford.org) or phone (248-6220), or stop by Town Hall to see him. For his additional thoughts on hydrofracking, be sure to see his column in this week’s Brighton-Pittsford Post.
