NYSDOT ANNOUNCES I-490 BRIDGE REPLACEMENT OVER MARSH RD.

Pittsford Project Will Provide Two Lanes in Each Direction Through 2017

New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) Commissioner Matthew J. Driscoll announced March 1, 2016 that construction is set to begin on a $4.1 million project to replace the bridge carrying Interstate 490 over Marsh Road in the town of Pittsford, Monroe County. 

"Interstate 490 is a critical corridor through the heart of downtown Rochester, providing connections to the city and the New York State Thruway," Commissioner Driscoll said. "As part of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo’s Drivers First initiative, this project has been designed to minimize impacts on traffic by building the new bridge in stages and allowing travel in both directions to be open throughout construction."

The bridge is located between Exit 25 (Route 31F and Fairport Road) and Exit 26 (Route 31.) The existing three-span, multi-girder bridge was built in 1955. It carries an estimated 44,000 vehicles each day.

The replacement bridge, a single span, will be slightly wider than the existing bridge. The widening will require tree removal within the state right-of-way. Clearing, which will have no impact to traffic, will begin in March in order to comply with federal environmental regulations.  Construction work is also expected to start on I-490 in early March. Two lanes will be open to traffic in each direction. Motorists should exercise caution and allow plenty of time to pass through the work zone. The project is scheduled to be completed in the fall of 2017.

Marsh Road will remain open, except for some short term closures during key construction activities, such as bridge demolition and delivery and placement of materials for the new structure.

"I'm grateful that the unprecedented investments we continue to make in Upstate infrastructure will support these needed improvements to one of our most vital roads and bridges. I thank Commissioner Driscoll and his entire team at NYSDOT for their partnership."

"Each and every day Monroe County residents utilize Interstate 490 as a means of traveling throughout our community and gaining access to the Thruway. The bridge over Marsh Road connects thousands of community members to their jobs and families and it is imperative that it remains a safe and viable structure for many years to come," said Monroe County Executive Cheryl Dinolfo. "I am pleased that the New York State Department of Transportation shares our commitment to ensuring the safety of infrastructure and has made this project a priority here in Monroe County."

The construction contractor for the project is Sealand Contractors, of Rush, Monroe County.
