Our celebration of Historic Preservation Month in Pittsford, which features a unique, historically designated landmark home each week during May in eNews and on the Town website, continues this week with a beautiful brick home at 5 Sunset Boulevard that is adjacent to one of Pittsford’s early housing developments.
A fine example of early 20th century Colonial Revival style, this impressive 3,280 square foot home was purchased by current owners Gerard and Dee Dee DiMarco in 2011. Its façade is striking, with five bays of windows across the front of the second floor and lovely details such as the simple pine tree cutouts on each of the many window shutters surrounding the home. A one-story wing on the west side of the home brings the outdoor beauty into the living area via nearly floor-to-ceiling multi-paned windows and roof-top access.
When 5 Sunset Boulevard was built in 1925, it was originally known as 151 West Jefferson Road and was adjacent to an early residential development known as Jefferson Heights. By the early 1920s auto ownership was becoming more of a necessity than a luxury for the American middle class and former farmlands across the community were being developed to serve a new concept: residential tracts for those who desired a more rural setting and were able to commute to the city to earn a living. The oldest section of the Jefferson Heights development was built in the late 1920s to early 1930s; today these homes are part of the Sunset Boulevard neighborhood. The splendid home at 5 Sunset Boulevard is part of this historically significant neighborhood and a wonderful reminder of the early development of Pittsford as a suburban community.
