Our celebration of Historic Preservation Month in Pittsford, which featured a unique, historically designated landmark home each week during May in eNews and on the Town website, comes to a close this week with a wonderful farmhouse noted to be the oldest home in Pittsford and built by a relative of Simon Stone, one of Pittsford’s founders.

The home at 3 Cross Meadow Lane (previously known as 784 Stone Road) beautifully exemplifies the roots of our community. With all the charm and functionality of a pioneer home and the ease of modern updates, it includes original wide plank floors, blown glass windows, early hand wrought hardware, hewn beams, and a marvelous cobblestone wall on its west wing. This unique and lovely home was featured on a Smith College tour in 1949 and in the 1976 issue of Early American Life magazine. The Real Estate Board of Rochester designated it a Revolutionary Landmark Home in 1976 and it has been part of several historic open house events over the years.

Built in 1793 by Simon Stone II, nephew of Simon Stone, this handsome early structure is 1½ stories and was originally built as a four room home with two bedrooms above. After falling into serious disrepair, it was purchased in 1948 by Mrs. Gertrude and Dr. Clifford Ford, who restored it with great care and in in keeping with the historic character of the home while adding modern amenities. Current owners Casey and Scott Weider, who purchased the home in 2010, have continued this tradition of stewardship. The home is located in the Milepost Historic District, just south of the Village, which includes several of the earliest properties to be settled and developed in the Town of Pittsford. A tangible reminder of Pittsford’s pioneer past, 3 Cross Meadow Lane is truly a community treasure
