Take precautions to keep safe during a winter storm:

  • Check weather reports before going out – dress appropriately and plan for travel delays due to weather
  • Follow weather advisories – stay off roads when advised and limit travel otherwise
  • In the case of deep snow, prevent dangerous carbon monoxide (CO) build up: check furnace and dryer vents on house exterior to ensure they are clear, make sure car exhaust pipe is clear when warming up car
  • Take care when shoveling heavy snow to avoid injury or health risks
  • In case of power outage, never use a generator, grill, camp stove or other gasoline, propane, natural gas or charcoal-burning devices inside a home, garage, basement, crawlspace or any partially enclosed area (doing so will create deadly carbon monoxide build up)
  • If it is safe to do so, check on friends and neighbors – including the elderly and those with health issues – who may need extra assistance
  • Bring pets inside or if not possible, ensure they have adequately warm and protected shelter
