STATUS REPORT

Earlier today I met here at Town Hall with Captain Samuel Bell, Commander of Zone A of the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department, to discuss the current situation involving power outages in Pittsford. We reviewed the situation and the Town’s intentions for different contingencies. As ever, Captain Bell’s advice has helped to improve our response to this situation.

Subsequently I spoke to my counterpart in Perinton, Supervisor Mike Barker. We agreed to open up the warming stations we each had set up to residents of both communities. Pittsford’s warming station, at the Library, may be more convenient for some residents of Perinton. And Perinton’s warming center, at the Perinton Recreation Center at 1350 Turk Hill Road, offers showers as well as other amenities. To summarize:

Pittsford Warming Center: Library at 24 State Street. 9am to 9pm, today April 5, Friday April 6 and Saturday April 7.

Perinton Warming Center: Perinton Recreation Center at 1350 Turk Hill Road. 6am to 10pm, today April 5, Friday April 6 and Saturday April 7.

This information we included in the flyers prepared for the canvassing of neighborhoods without power.

Later in the day I joined other Town Supervisors, County, State and City of Rochester officials in a conference call with representatives of RG&E, for a status update. RG&E says crews are in the field and working in the Towns such as Pittsford where there are neighborhoods not promised a return of power until nearly midnight on Saturday, that the Saturday completion time is not due to deploying crews elsewhere until later in the process. So there exists, they stated, at least a hope that those neighborhoods – mine, by the way, is one of them – might see power restored earlier than midnight Saturday.

You’ll find more information on coping with the current outage on the town website: www.townofpittsford.org. And please, if you are able to read this and have neighbors who may be vulnerable in one way or another, please look in on them to see that they’re safe and that they have what they need. Let us know at Town Hall if we can help.

5:00pm
NEIGHBORHOOD CANVASSING
Once RG&E notified the Town earlier today that there would be neighborhoods without power until Saturday night, we immediately proceeded with emergency notification plans.

As we did last year, volunteers from our Town staff have gone out to canvass those neighborhoods door-to-door, to check on the safety of residents without means of communication and to provide them with an information sheet detailing locations of warming stations and providing other important information. Members of our Fire Department have also offered to help, as they did a year ago.

As I write this, they’re still out there.

Here’s a glimpse of the scene at Town Hall earlier today as we went over the plans.

MORNING UPDATE: SERVICES

1. WARMING STATION AT PITTSFORD LIBRARY.
If you need a place to stay warm pending restoration of power, please go to the Library at 24 State Street in the Village. I've had equipment sent over to the Library to permit multiple additional charging ports for cell phones. We will have coffee, tea and cookies available. We'll evaluate keeping it open late, after the normal 9:00pm closing time, as we learn more about the power situation throughout the day.

2. PITTSFORD RECREATION CLOSED
The Town's Recreation Department at 5611 Palmyra Road remains closed, pending restoration of electricity. On-site programs for today have been cancelled, off-site programs continue as scheduled.

8:45am
MORNING UPDATE: ELECTRICITY
I was on the phone with RG&E about half an hour ago. Most places in Pittsford that lost power yesterday afternoon remain without it this morning. There are now about 1,800 customers in Town without electricity. Still no estimate by RG&E for restoration in any of the affected neighborhoods.
I will be speaking today with RG&E management and technical staff. Typically the heads of their field crews size up the day's work starting at about 6:00am. Their estimates of power restoration begin with this assessment.

Wednesday, April 4

4:45pm
STUYVESANT ROAD and adjoining streets: power out. Also western end of Thornell Road and adjoining streets. No estimate yet from RG&E for restoration of power.

3:45pm
PITTSFORD RECREATION DEPARTMENT CLOSED
The Pittsford Recreation Center, at 5611 Pittsford-Palmyra Road, lost electric power earlier this afternoon and remains without it, with no estimated restoration time in sight. Accordingly, the Rec. Department has closed. Regular programs are cancelled for the rest of the day.

11:15am
ELECTRIC POWER STATUS
There are now about 1480 houses in Pittsford out of power, with outages in the Marsh Road area, the Knickerbocker Road area and the Railroad Mills/East Street corridor.

RG&E estimates restoration of electricity in these areas at about 12:45pm.

Following our Town protocols in situations such as today's high wind situation, Town Hall is in contact with all emergency services and are prepared to support their needs as necessary.

10:10am
POWER OUTAGE UPDATE
RG&E now expects to have electric power restored in the Stone Road area about 2:15pm.

9:40am
POWER OUTAGE STATUS - HIGH WIND ADVISORY
Right now about 230 residents in the area of Stone Road are without power.

I’ve been in touch with RG&E. It estimates restoration of power by 10:15am in the affected neighborhoods.

These include Candlewood, Chattingham Court, Clover Street, Sutton Point, Stoney Clover, South Pittsford Hill, Dartmouth Court, Doral Court, Hidden Springs Drive, Hogan Court , Linden Cove, St. Andrew’s Hill, Swickley Court, Wessex Court and Stone Road.

The high winds will continue to increase in severity through mid-afternoon, with peak wind gusts through the evening, according to the National Weather Service.

The Governor’s Office has reached out and advises that regional stockpiles of generators, pumps, lighting and other emergency equipment are poised and ready for response, as well as
