Flaggers to Direct Alternating Single Lane of Traffic through Work Zone

Due to work to install a new traffic light, the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) is advising motorists to seek an alternate route or allow extra time at the intersection of Route 31 (Palmyra Road) and Mitchell Road/Hahnemann Trail for approximately a month beginning Wednesday, October 25.

Flaggers will direct alternating one-way traffic through the work zone on weekdays, generally between the hours of 9 to 3p.m. Motorists should anticipate delays, be prepared to stop and allow plenty of extra time to pass though the work zone or adjust travel times.

Highway workers are in the initial steps of installing a new traffic signal at this intersection.  During the next month, crews will be working underground, installing traffic control boxes and building an ADA compliant concrete sidewalk on the north side of Route 31. Signal poles are being fabricated and will be installed, along with mast arms and the signal head in the spring.

The new three-color traffic signal, expected to be functioning in the spring, will better control traffic at this high-volume intersection and help address a pattern of right-angle accidents.  Pedestrian crossing indicators will be present on the north leg across Hahnemann Trail.

Motorists are reminded that fines are doubled for speeding in work zones.  In accordance with the Work Zone Safety Act of 2005, convictions of two or more speeding violations in a work zone could result in the suspension of an individual’s driver’s license.
